sos torture

The most dangerous time for someone threatened with torture is often immediately after detention. The place of detention is often not yet known to friends or relatives. There is no access to a lawyer. In these conditions a swift message to authority can save a prisoner from torture and even death. In any cases too victims always benefit from a speedy response.

SOS Torture helps:

  • Detainees at immediate risk of torture

  • Detainees who have been tortured and remain in prison

  • Those receiving death threats

  • Those who have ‘disappeared’

  • Persons threatened with extrajudicial execution

The SOS Torture Scheme:

  • Receives urgent appeals from various human rights organisations [ including OMCT (Organisation Mondiale contre la torture) and The Observatory (campaigning for human rights defenders) both based in Geneva - INCLUDE?]

  • Needs volunteers to respond to appeals very quickly

  • Supplies details of appeal cases and points to make in appeals

WILL YOU VOLUNTEER? LIVES DEPEND ON FAST ACTION

Swift action can mean all the difference between life and death. Appeals can result in cases being reviewed, conditions improved, prisoners released, death squads called off.
